Steel Band
The OJHS Steelband is a musical ensemble that is comprised primarily of steel drums, or steelpans. The steelpan is a Trinidadian instrument whose sound is synonymous with white sand beaches and the stereotypical Caribbean lifestyle. But the steelband is anything but simple and laid back. This ensemble parallels the complexities of a string orchestra as it spans almost 6 octaves of range with five different steelpans of varying ranges simultaneously playing their individual parts. The OJHS Steelband plays music from traditional Trinidadian pan composers to calypso and reggae adaptations of popular music and jazz standards.
Students audition to be in the steelband on their instrument of choice. Most audition on their normal band instrument, such as saxophone, trumpet or clarinet, but piano and guitar players are often seen in the auditions as well. Students then learn the basics of the instrument with fundamentals such as scales and arpeggios. Then, as they become familiar with the physical layout of their new instrument, the students start playing their first song by the third rehearsal. Rehearsals take place after school from 2:30 PM-4:00 PM two days a week and are open to anyone who can display grade level musical competency with another instrumental discipline. The PJHS Steelband is now in its fourth year and was a finalist in this year’s “Valley’s Got Talent” at the Gallo Center in Modesto.
